Times Square

Times Square is not a place

most NYers enjoy being

(or most tourists, after the first 10 minutes):

it's full of gawkers who walk slowly

and people tactlessly soliciting your money.

There is no amount of money

you  could offer me

which would make me stand there

on New Year's Eve.

However, there is something about it

There must be, or why would people go there?

It's the feeling of everything rushing towards and away from you at once

the optical illusion of humanity seething onward into the darkness

And the jagged distinction between heaven and earth

etched in cubic zirconia

by human hands.

Utica

I visited a friend

living in Utica.

The houses are like Chautauqua houses

in architecture

if not upkeep.

Central New York State, folks.

It can be a sucky place to live.

Big Houses

The Upper West Side

never fails to both frustrate

and impress

and astonish

and delight

me.

Who would I have

to make fun of

if it weren't for the

grandmas in their

 absurdly expensive Lululemon

track suits

and coffee cups.

What would I have 

to aspire to

without the 

pretty young things

in their ties

and pearl sets

who were probably born there

and can't think of a

reason to leave

(can you?).

I swear I have

I guess I never
