Tap Dancing a Gesture Drawing

42nd Street Backstage Notebook

Getting to watch the tapdancers backstage was exhilarating.
I love tapdancing, and to be so close
to so many talented people
and to (get paid to) watch them every night
did nothing to diminish my respect
for their craft.

Unfortunately, tap dancers are much more difficult
to draw than Shakespearian actors
or even Modern Dancers.

Some of my drawings looked like this:

But most of them looked like this:

Shen Wei Dance Arts

ShenWei06

The Shen Wei Show was an
interesting one to draw.

Shen Wei is a total artist,
and he creates incredibly striking stage pictures
especially in the second item of the evening,
"Folding."

The types of drawings I could create
reminded me not a little of the ones I made
(like this one)
Juliet
while watching my College's production
of Romeo & Juliet
three years ago.
Not exactly a surprise,
considering R& J was directed in the
Beijing Opera Style,
and Shen Wei
studied Beijing Opera as a child.

The New Old Job

I disappeared again!

ShenWei01

This time I was working at
the Park Avenue Armory
Supervising wardrobe for
Shen Wei Dance Arts
Shen Wei helped to coreograph the
opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics
and has won a MacArthur Foundation Grant.

I didn't really plan to abandon you,
but
I worked 140 hours
in the last 11 days.

I got the job through a friend from Chautauqua
...Internships are totally worth it, y'all.
You just have to pick the right one.
